First of all, you need to understand what waterbending is. Waterbending is the manipulation of liquid, mainly water. H2O, or Water, is a very basic organic solvent, making it the easiest of liquids to bend. It is also very easy to bend other organic solvents such as Ethanol, etc. But water is the most practical, as it is the easiest to come by. Most practical waterbending techniques involve a fluid and constant movement. Levitating and holding a mass of water in the air for longer periods of time is extremely difficult to do, and it is usually hard to come by a waterbender that can do this effectively.
Chi is needed for bending any element. It is the energy that our body utilizes to allows us to live. It travels along neuronic pathways throughout our body, the central pathway being the vertebrae. Chi is the energy that keeps our heart beating. It allows us to run, breath, and do any other bodily activity. But what most people dont know, is that chi also allows us to bend! Before you can start bending you need to strengthen your chi. Right now, your chi is only strong enough to do the things you do everyday, but after you are through with your training, your chi will be strong enough to bend the elements.
Telekinesis is also needed for most bending techniques. Telekinesis is the act of moving an object with your mind. Raw telekineis is very difficult, and is more difficult than any bending you will do. It is the mixture of telekinesis and chi that allows us to bend. Bending is more practical than telekineis. With telekinesis, you have to sit and meditate for long periods of time, and then end with a drawn out attempt to move an object. If you combine telekinesis and chi, you get bending, which is much easier than raw telekinesis. What most people dont know, is that telekinesis does in fact utilize chi. But it uses chi in a different method than what you would use chi for in regular chi techniques. It relies on your sense of touch. Basically all telekinesis is, is feeling something happening. When you feel an object moving, your brain is telling your hand to move it, but you are not allowing it to move. Your chi activates to move your hand, but your hand itself is not moving. The energy then causes the object to move. You are not accessing your chi directly with this technique, so it is much easier to use chi and telekinesis at the same time, than to use two chi techniques at the same time.
Now that you know how bending works, its time to start it!. Read the next section for your first instruction on how to get started with bending.

If you read the previous section, you will have a good idea about what chi is. Now you are probably wondering how to control this energy! The answer is easy, because you do it every day. When you move your hand to move the mouse connected to your computer, you are using chi to do this. When you go for a walk, you are using chi. It is chi that makes all these things possible. It is the energy that allows your brain to do what it does. Everything your body does, comes down to one basic principle, Chi. Chi therefore is as far as we know, the most basic energy in the world.
Now, I will tell you how to use your chi to do different things besides what you do every day. The most basic unique thing you can do with your chi, is make a chi ball. The chi ball is the building block for almost every bending technique you will learn. But first, you need to know how to get your body to notice your chi. In other words, you have to learn how to "feel" your chi.
Feeling Your Chi
First, you are going to do a meditation. Meditation is a state of deep concentration and relaxation. You have probably meditated before and dont even know it. There are many meditations out there that include thinking about a specific thing, but I will teach you the most basic one. Simply just close your eyes and block out everything, relax until you can focus on nothing but the black behind your eyes. Simple right?
Now its time to feel your chi. Open your eyes, and try to stay focused. Now, try and feel something in your body. It can feel like anything you want. Hot, cold, tingly, etc. Feel this sensation all throughout your body. Feel it strongest in your vertebrae. If you can do this, then you can now feel your chi!
Now that you can feel your chi, its time to do something with it.
After you feel your chi, attempt to shift the feeling to both of your hands. After you successfuly shift your chi, cup your hands together as if you were holding a ball. Now, feel your chi exiting your hands, and as soon as the chi from both hands collide, feel them forming a ball. How you feel them forming a ball, is nearly impossible to explain. It is the same basic principle you used to shift your chi to your hands. Except you are feeling the chi forming a ball. It can take some time to figure out, but once you do it will be easy. Now that you have it in a ball, feel the ball spinning. Spinning your chi ball will help you with a technique called "Chi Control". Chi control is the control of your own chi outside your body.
Once you can make a chi ball, you are on your way to bending. There are many other chi techniques out there, all of which can help strengthen your chi, which in turn will make your bending stronger, and much easier.

By now you know what telekinesis is. It is very crucial for bending. And although it may be difficult to do, it pays off when you get to bending. Unlike chi techniques, there is only one telekinesis technique. So once you can do telekinesis, you dont have to learn anything else new about it.
Telekineis is a very simply explained technique, but it takes a lot of practice to get down. The thing about telekinesis that most people dont know, is that your chi is linked with it. The stronger your chi, the stronger your telekinesis will be. Even though telekinesis is a completely different technique, it is still linked with the strength of your chi. Something that I find is very useful to practice telekinesis on, is a psi wheel. You can make this out of everyday household objects. All you need is paper, an eraser, and a needle. To find out how to make a psi wheel, follow this link. http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Psi-Wheel
To start telekinesis, you will need to do a simple meditation. Close your eyes, and breath in and out. Relax, and dont think about anything. When you can focus on nothing but the blackness behind your eyes, open them up. Try to maintain your focus throughout this whole technique.
Now, place your hand somewhat near the psi wheel. Not too close, or else your body heat will make it turn, and we want telekinesis to turn the wheel not your body heat. Feel your hand moving the psi wheel. If it helps, you can slowly move your hand while doing this. Simply feel your hand moving the object. This technique relies heavily on the sense of touch. Closing your eyes and visualizing the object move will not do you any good. Dont imagine the object moving either. Just feel it moving. Like chi control, this is a very hard technique to explain. But once you figure it out, it will be easy to practice it. The more you attempt at this technique, the easier it will get. Dont practice chi techniques as a substitution for practicing telekinesis. They are two completely different techniques, but their source is the same. It's just like going for a jog. The source is still your chi, but you cant go for a jog as a substitution for practicing chi techniques.

I am assuming that if you are reading this section, you are able to work with chi, and do telekinesis.
There are two parts to basic waterbending. One is moving water, and another is lifting water. When I say lifting water, I do not mean literally making water airborne, I am refering to making the water rise.
The first waterbending technique you should learn, is moving the water. Then, you will learn how to lift the water
Moving water is fairly simple once you get the hang of it.
First of all, you will need to know how to use Chi Radiation. It is a fairly easy skill if you already know how to make a chi ball. To learn Chi Radiation you will need to visit the Chi Techniques page. You will also need to know how to use telekinesis. Meditations are optional in any bending technique. If you can bend without meditating, then go for it. But if you want to meditate anyway then go right ahead. Meditation will make bending easier and stronger for you, but if you are in a situation where you cant meditate then you are allowed to skip over it. You can find meditations in the Meditations page.
Now, lets get started. First take a bowl of water. It would be nice if you can get a clear bowl, so you can see all of the water, but if you cant then just stick with any bowl you can get your hands on. Try and use purified water, but again if you dont have access to this then use any water you can get. Sit down in front of the bowl, and place your hands over it. Use chi radiation to radiate your chi onto the surface of the water. continue to use Chi Radiation throughout this technique. Now, move your hands and use telekinesis on the water. The telekinesis portion is crucial, so you will really want to do your best to feel the water moving. As a beginner, do not radiate your chi into the water, simply radiate it onto the surface.
Now that you can move water, its time to learn how to make it rise
LIfting water can take a lot of perserverance, but as long as you keep practicing, it gets easier.
You will need to know Chi Radiation as you did in the previous technique, and you also need to know telekinesis. I strongly recommend that as a beginner, you meditate before attempting this.
Sit in front of your bowl of water. Now, use Chi Radiation on the surface of the water. After you have done this, move your hands foward, and then up, and use telekinesis while doing this. Make sure you move the water foward first, because that will make it collect which will make it easier to lift. Once you can make the water rise a bit, keep practicing and try to get it to go higher and higher. Remember this technique isnt about detatching water from the bowl, it is about making the water rise.
Once you can do both Moving Water and Lifting Water, give yourself a pat on the back, you are officially a waterbender! Once you become a waterbender, you are ready to learn waterbending techniques! Head over to the WaterBending page to learn them.
